"Built on the foundation of apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the cornerstone." - Ephesians 2:20

The Seven Pines Baptist Church

Seven Pines Baptist Church was founded in May 1872, located on a tract of land between the Southern Railroad tracks and Williamsburg Road under a tree that was later struck by lightning, thus called “The Lightening Tree”, with brush put around it for shelter.

There was a parcel of land (one acre) triangular in shape on the southside of Williamsburg Road a short distance west of Sandston.  This property was conveyed to trustees Peter Anderson, Essex Hill, Benjamin Goode, and Robert Laws, on August 1872, as recorded in Deed Book 90, page 207- Court House of Henrico County.  In 1874 a log church was built and later a frame church.

On Sunday, November 14, 1926, one of the most beautiful church buildings in the county was dedicated, as The Seven Pines Baptist Church.  In 1937, the church building was destroyed by fire.  The Dry Bridge School located in the Seven Pines area of Williamsburg Road was temporary place of worship.

In 1938, The Rising Star Society Hall on Williamsburg Road was purchased for $500.00 and services were held there for nine years.  In, 1940, the property was taken under “eminent domain proceedings” (absolute ownership and control of the land) and the Army paid the Seven Pines Baptist Church $2300.00 for the land and improvements.  Church membership was 125 persons.  It is unknown where services were held for seven years.

In 1945, after the ending of World War II, Pastor Thomas A. Collins went to Washington, D.C. to negotiate with the personnel of the War Assets Administration to purchase an Army Chapel that was located in the area of the Richmond International Airport.

On Thursday, January 1947 the church membership was blessed to purchase the Army chapel for $750.00.  Immediately work of taking down, hauling and reconstructing the chapel was under-taken by Mr. Arthur Brown, Deacons Leslie Miles, Sr. Percy Robinson, Willis Pankey, and other, male members with Mr. Clarence Friend as he building contractor.  The basic structure was reconstructed on this present site with improvements constantly being made.

In November 1972, the Centennial Celebration of the church was held.  The lower level was finished with a kitchen, classrooms, office space, furnace room, dining/multipurpose area, baptismal pool and restrooms.  The Centennial Banquet was held in the church.  The first Pastor was Enes Dickerson, others include Albert Mayo, Archer Ferguson, J. R. Vaughn, Tunstall Banks, James Ross, Frank Mitchell, Hugh Williams, J.P. Polk, and James L. Carter for 41 ½ years.
